Join this 7 day cycling tour on the Atlantic Coast of France and enjoy a journey through medieval towns. With our experienced guides on hand, we learn about the fascinating history as we cycle through quiet farmlands, riverside villages and rolling countryside.
Travel in classic French style as we stay in lovely chateau accommodations, soak up the sun in charming terraced cafes and cobbled streets and sample some of the region’s best gourmet offerings. Try fresh fish, local lamb and beef, goats cheese and of course the Cognac brandy the region is famous for & local wine including a specialty called Pineau des Charentes.
Visit historic Rochefort and the beautiful old port town of La Rochelle, cycle along the gently meandering Charente river. Enjoy a boat trip round the Ile d'Aix and historic Fort Boyard. Get the fun of cycling in a group and making new friends!
Day 1
Collection from train station and transfer to our hotel in the Charentais countryside. Set up bikes and go for a short ride before having some free time in the afternoon and our first gourmet dinner.
Day 2
Begin our cycling along the Charente River. Visit the Abbaye de Bassac before lunch in the riverside village of Jarnac. A highlight guided visit and tasting at the Courvoisier distillery then stay the night in Cognac. Cycling distance 43km
Day 3
Travel north across the countryside and enjoy a picnic lunch. Ride into Saintes and visit one of the oldest arenas in the province, the Roman Amphitheatre, dating back to 40AD. Spend the night in Saintes. Cycling distance 46km
Day 4
Visit Chateau of La Roche Courbon resorted to reflect the furnishings of the 17th and 18th century, then cycle into Rochefort where we will stay for 2 nights. Cycling distance 47km
Day 5
No need to pack as we stay another night in Rochefort. Experience the 19th century Le Pont Transbordeur (transporter bridge) and visit the village of Hiers-Brouage before heading back to Rochefort. Cycling distance 48km
Day 6
Cycle towards the Atlantic Ocean to the old port of La Rochelle where we spend the night. Take a boat ride from the famous harbour and enjoy a free afternoon the explore before dinner. Cycling distance 44km
Day 7
Enjoy our last breakfast, say goodbye and transfer to the train station for your onward journey
